CBC News – 70% of Roma Refugee Claims Now Positive in Ontario, After Years of Low Success Rates
In 2013, only 21 per cent of Roma refugee claims in Ontario were positive. Over the next few years, the total number of claims processed started to rise, and so did the number of positive outcomes, from 55 per cent in 2014 to 77 per cent in 2015. Since then, the number of positive cases has stayed above 70 per cent, meaning the board is giving more Roma claimants the green light to stay in Canada.
CBC News – Asylum Seekers in Atlantic Canada Had Highest Refugee Acceptance Rate Last Year
Asylum seekers in Atlantic Canada were more likely to have their refugee claims accepted last year than anywhere else in the country. For the first nine months of 2017, 90 per cent of refugee claims made in Atlantic Canada were approved, according to Immigration and Refugee Board decisions analyzed by CBC News. That compares to a national acceptance rate of 70 per cent over the same period.
A CBC News investigation reveals one in six female asylum seekers in Canada is fleeing persecution because she is a woman — for reasons including forced marriage and female genital mutilation. Half of those women say they were fleeing abusive partners or family members. Statistics show female asylum seekers were slightly more likely to have their claims accepted than males. However, women who cited gender persecution as a cause for their claim were less likely to have their claims accepted than people fleeing for political, religious or ethnic reasons.
Chronicle Herald – Initiative Aims to Help At-Risk Scholars Find Safe Haven
Karly Kehoe is hoping to help academics and researchers who have been displaced by war or other safety issues in their home countries find a safe haven to continue their research. Kehoe is the Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Canada Communities at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. On Tuesday, the university will host a panel discussion and screening of a 30-minute documentary film on the topic of Science in Exile, Scholars at Risk and the Future of Research.
