A Yazidi boy who was held captive for three years by Iraqi militants got his wish to meet with Justin Trudeau, simply by showing up to the prime minister’s town hall meeting in Winnipeg. Thirteen-year-old Emad Mishko Tamo made a video appeal to Trudeau that was posted to social media by the Yazidi Association of Manitoba last month.

Le Mexique a intercepté plus de 300 migrants originaires d’Amérique centrale qui se rendaient aux États-Unis dans des conditions déplorables, sans eau ni nourriture, ont indiqué samedi les autorités. A parliamentary report is urging Ottawa to establish uniform guidelines and standards for the collection and handling of hate crime data to standardize the definition and interpretation of hate crimes by enforcement agencies. The standing committee on Canadian heritage study also recommends the federal government create a directorate to oversee a national action plan against racism, plus increased funding for law enforcement and security agencies to probe hate speech on the internet and to enforce existing laws.
According to Immigration Department data, about 20 per cent, or 555 caregivers out of 2,730 applicants, were granted permanent residency in the country in the three years after the former Conservative government set out the new language and post-secondary education requirements in November 2014. Under the old live-in caregiver program, an average of 8,000 caregivers received permanent status every year between 2006 and 2014 after they fulfilled the two-year live-in employment commitment and got their medical and criminal clearances.
