L’ancien député progressiste-conservateur Carl Benito a été condamné à deux ans de détention à domicile et devra payer 75 000 dollars d’amende pour fraude à l’immigration en Alberta. Il devra également faire 100 heures de travaux d’intérêt collectif et sera pendant deux ans en probation, après sa peine à domicile.Son fils Charles a également été condamné par la Cour du Banc du Roi. Les deux hommes avaient plaidé coupables le 5 octobre pour avoir employé illégalement huit ressortissants étrangers entre 2016 et 2018 à Edmonton et Calgary.

Protéger les enfants est le but d’une nouvelle politique adoptée par le district scolaire du centre de l’Okanagan, en Colombie-Britannique, qui veut désormais être un sanctuaire. L’idée est que les familles ayant un statut d’immigration précaire puissent tout de même accéder à l’éducation, sans crainte d’être interrogées ou expulsées. La politique a été votée à l’unanimité mercredi par la commission scolaire du centre de l’Okanagan. Celle-ci requiert que toutes les écoles du district agissent en tant que sanctuaires pour les enfants qui vivent dans la région.

Carlito and Charles Benito pleaded guilty earlier this month to charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of employing unauthorized foreign nationals. The immigration consultants employed eight illegal foreign nationals in Edmonton and Calgary and paid them less than $10 an hour between 2016 and 2018. During this time, the two men operated three immigration consulting firms.
CTV News – Fake Canadian Visa Program Circulating on Facebook and WhatsApp
The Tech Transparency Project (TTP) is calling on social media giant Meta to crack down on Canadian visa scams spreading on its platforms. The organization is a research initiative holding big companies accountable. According to a summary of an investigation it conducted, posts from Facebook accounts claiming to be immigration lawyers are targeting migrant hopefuls offering free travel to Canada, with employment and accommodation accessed through websites.

The posts, documented in a new report by the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), the research arm of watchdog group the Campaign for Accountability, have been flagged as potentially fraudulent by Latin American and Canadian authorities but continue to proliferate. Purporting to be authored by Canadian immigration lawyers, the posts claim that Canada is recruiting more than 400,000 people for a jobs program that will grant those accepted an immediate work permit.
