A group in Winnipeg is offering a warm welcome to Afghan refugees arriving in the city. Volunteers and staff at the Excel Empowerment Centre in Winnipeg have been sewing handmade quilts to give to the refugees settling in the city. Rebecca Deng, the founder and executive director of the centre, said she got the idea to hand out the quilts two weeks ago when she learned of the Afghan families arriving in Winnipeg.

CBC News – ‘Urgent’ Demand for Bilingual Public Sector Workers in N.L., Say Recruiters
More than 100 bilingual government jobs are now vacant in just two federal departments in Newfoundland and Labrador, with members of an organization hired to help fill the positions blaming a recent wave of retirements in the public service. Horizon TNL, a group that helps link bilingual workers with employers, said since the beginning of 2021, three federal departments have sought its help filling 84 bilingual jobs. Four provincial government ministries also hired the group to help find 13 bilingual workers.

Le Mouvement des associations générales étudiantes de l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (MAGE-UQAC) accueille favorablement la proposition du Parti québécois d’offrir des incitatifs financiers aux étudiants étrangers pour que ceux-ci s’établissent en région après leur passage en classe. Actuellement, la clientèle internationale représente environ le quart de l’ensemble de la population étudiante de l’UQAC. Or, bien peu de ces étudiants demeurent ici quand ils ont obtenu leur diplôme.

Alors que le Québec vit une importante pénurie de main-d’œuvre, les différents partis ont une vision bien différente de l’immigration. Le Parti québécois (PQ) veut abaisser les seuils du nombre de nouveaux arrivants, tandis que le Parti libéral (PLQ) et Québec solidaire (QS) veulent les hausser. Mais les études se contredisent au sujet de l’incidence de l’immigration sur la pénurie de main-d’œuvre. Une chose est certaine : avec les seuils actuels promis par les différents partis politiques, le poids démographique du Québec au sein du Canada est voué à diminuer.
