CBC News – P.E.I. Makes It Easier for Ukrainian Newcomers to Get Driver’s Licence
Ukrainian newcomers to P.E.I. will now be able to get their driver’s licence faster. The province announced Thursday that starting next week, newcomers with a full-stage Ukrainian Category B passenger vehicle licence will be able to get their P.E.I. Class 5 without having to write an exam or take a road test. Commercial or motorcycle licences aren’t eligible. And those who want the P.E.I. licence must provide their valid driver’s licence or a translated copy in English and French, as well as two documents that show their address.

Mississauga politician Omar Alghabra is one of the 2022 top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award recipients, presented by Canadian Immigrant Magazine. The annual awards recognize the accomplishments of Canadian immigrants who have made significant contributions to Canada through a variety of professions. Alghabra, MP for Mississauga Centre, has served as federal minister of transport since January 2021.
Global News – Organizations Calling for Targeted Swimming Programs After Death of Young Immigrant
As the Manitoba Nigerian community is mourning the loss of a young boy who died in a drowning accident, support agencies say there need to be more specialized programs to help newcomers learn important life-saving skills. The young boy was taken off life-support after doctors tried to save his life after the July 21 incident in Valley Gardens. On July 21, emergency crews were called to the townhouse complex after the drowning incident but the child didn’t make it.
National Post – Canadian Government Unfairly Changed Standards for Immigration Cases, Judge Rules
The government has a small immigration category for self-employed artists and athletes. The program is meant to offer a path to citizenship for people with world-class talents. But in an internal memo revealed during the court process, bureaucrats admitted the information available about the program was confusing and there was no clear standard. The case before the court involved just over 100 applicants from Iran who applied to come to Canada and were rejected.
CBC News – ‘Waiting for Our Death’: Afghan Military Lawyers Beg Canada for Help to Escape
A former Canadian military legal officer says a group of Afghan lawyers and other staff who helped his mission in Afghanistan have been “left in the dark,” and is urging Canada’s Immigration Ministry to act quickly to help them escape the Taliban. It’s been one year since Canada began accepting fleeing Afghans through its one-year special immigration program for Afghans who helped the Canadian government, set up a few weeks before Kabul fell to the Taliban in August 2021.
