Some Ukranian newcomers are struggling to find accommodations in Edmonton due to a backlog on the main host family resource. Sofiia Postolatii, 24, fled Ukraine and came to Canada in April. Although Postolatii managed to secure a job in Edmonton after having worked with the Canadian Armed Forces in the Ukrainian city of Sumy, she says finding housing has been a big challenge.

Misha Hermanenko walked into German Solar Corp., a solar panel manufacturer and installer on Robins Hill Road in London, about two months ago and asked for work, explaining he had fled the war in Ukraine and needed a job. German, who owns the business, said his wife is of Ukrainian descent so the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the displacement of Ukrainians is an issue close to home.

A provincial funding boost tripling the annual budget of a Halifax clinic for refugees is being hailed as crucial at a time when the province is experiencing regular increases in newcomers. Dr. Tim Holland, the lead doctor at the Newcomer Health Clinic, told reporters Tuesday the annual increase of $684,000 is a “game-changer” for his facility. The funding was included in the 2022-23 provincial budget and will bring the total annual budget for the clinic to more than $1 million.
Global News reported a week ago about a recent interruption of Guaranteed Income Supplement payments to seniors. Now, more community workers are speaking out about delays and problems in other federal government departments, and some experts believe it could take some time before some of the problems are resolved. Franz André, a co-ordinator with Comite d’action des Personnes sans status, a refugee support group, noted that with the volume of people arriving since last fall, he’s seeing more delays in services to them.

Amir Abolhassani sold his house in Saskatoon when his U.S.-based employer asked him to relocate to North Carolina. But at the Calgary airport this January, his family was not allowed to cross the border. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer told Abolhassani, who is a Canadian citizen, that it was because of time he spent as a conscript in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) more than a decade ago. The family was subjected to a secondary screening involving a long interview and an extensive search of their belongings, cellphones and social media.
