Free Press – Manitoba Signs on to Push for Expanded Immigration Powers
Manitoba Immigration Minister Jon Reyes has added his name to a letter calling on Ottawa to give the provinces more authority over the resettlement of skilled workers amid an unprecedented labour shortage. “It is time that the federal government respected provinces and allowed them to seize this opportunity, recruit workers and offer them good jobs,” the letter sent Tuesday to federal Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser reads.

Le Tunisien Firas Bouzgarrou, qui avait appris l’automne dernier en direct de l’aéroport qu’il pouvait finalement rester temporairement au pays à la suite de l’intervention du ministre fédéral de l’Immigration, Sean Fraser, a remporté une nouvelle victoire. Un autre agent devra étudier sa demande de résidence permanente pour motifs humanitaires, a statué la Cour fédérale dans une décision transmise lundi au Devoir. Il n’avait pas pu rester au pays le minimum exigé par la loi, c’est-à-dire 730 jours sur une période de 5 ans.

A Ukrainian family that now lives in Kitchener said it’s been challenging settling into their new home. Silas Sulemn and his family fled the war-torn country and moved to Canada in May. They fled their home in Kyiv with just a few clothes and enough food for the journey. The family came to Canada on an emergency visa, and was sponsored by Rudy Kruppa.
CBC News – After Months of Delay, B.C. Scholar Gets Canadian Travel Document Needed for U.S. Job
After spending nearly half a year trying to secure it, Vancouver-based Chinese scholar Guldana Salimjan has received the Canadian travel document that will allow her to pursue her research in the United States and reunite with her husband. It comes two weeks after CBC reported delays in the processing of her application by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Salimjan, a postdoctoral fellow at Simon Fraser University (SFU), is one of more than two million Canadians left in limbo due to immigration status and travel document delays.
La Tribune – Seulement 7000 immigrants établis en Estrie depuis 2010
Sur plus d’un demi-million d’immigrants qui sont arrivés au Québec depuis 2010, seulement 7224 se sont installés et résidaient toujours en Estrie en 2021. De ce nombre, plus de 6300 ont choisi Sherbrooke alors que les MRC voisines se partagent les miettes. L’Estrie représente 5,8 % de la population, mais n’a reçu que 2 % des immigrants depuis 2010. Ce faible influx d’immigrants met évidemment beaucoup de pression sur le marché de l’emploi dans la région qui manque tout simplement de travailleurs.

Following CTV National News’ multiple investigations, this week Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sent a large delegation of federal employees to the hotel to meet with staff from Polycultural, the organization hired by the government to help resettle and care for refugees at the hotel. In an email, the IRCC was asked what their plans are to fix the alleged issues plaguing these refugees.
