Radio-Canada – La santé des migrants et réfugiés en prend un coup

Emplois dangereux, détentions prolongées, logements inadéquats, vulnérabilité accrue à l’exploitation : les conditions des migrants et des réfugiés dans leurs pays d’accueil ou durant leur traversée ont souvent un impact négatif sur leur santé, note le premier rapport global de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) sur la question. L’OMS dénonce notamment le « phénomène mondial croissant » de la détention des ressortissants étrangers pour des raisons liées à l’immigration ou à l’asile.

CBC News – Nigerian Students Question UPEI’s Requirement for English Proficiency Test

A researcher at the University of British Columbia who is originally from Nigeria says students from Nigeria and other African countries should not be asked to take English proficiency tests to get into universities such as UPEI. Olumuyiwa Igbalajobi said on Twitter that the system is unfair, since English is the official language of Nigeria, and all education is taught in English.

CBC News – Sudbury Woman Says Jamaican Husband May Miss Child’s Birth After Canadian Residency Request Rejected

A Sudbury, Ont., woman says her Jamaican husband has been turned down for Canadian residency and they’re appealing immigration officials’ decision, but in the meantime, he could miss their child’s birth in October. Ariella Ladouceur said she and Cordell James got married in October 2020, and recent efforts to have him come to Canada have not been successful. The couple met in 2018 while working for the same airline.

The Conversation – Canada Is Foolish To Snub International Graduate Students And Scholars

In January 2017, Donald Trump, then president of the United States, barred entry to the U.S. of people from predominantly Muslim countries. In response, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lauded Canada as an open and welcoming nation. But some criticized Trudeau’s #WelcomeToCanada tweet, calling it virtue signalling and saying it offered false hope and perpetuated a disingenuous portrayal of the Canadian immigration practices.

Des membres de divers organismes d’aide aux personnes migrantes étaient présents, notamment à l’initiative de l’organisme Solidarité sans frontières, pour revendiquer un programme de régularisation du statut qui inclurait toutes les personnes migrantes. « Quand tu portes préjudice aux personnes sans statut, tu le fais aussi envers leurs enfants », déclare avec conviction Serge Leclerc, membre du collectif Le droit de vivre en paix, qui défend les droits des Chiliens au Canada. Au moins deux candidats de Québec solidaire aux prochaines élections provinciales étaient également présents.

Radio-Canada – L’Ontario veut plus de pouvoirs en immigration comme le Québec

Le gouvernement ontarien veut obtenir un meilleur contrôle sur l’immigration dans sa province pour attirer plus de travailleurs qualifiés de l’étranger et ainsi combler sa pénurie de main-d’œuvre dans certains secteurs. C’est pourquoi il compte renégocier son entente sur l’immigration avec le gouvernement fédéral cet automne. Le ministre provincial du Travail, de l’Immigration, de la Formation et du Développement des compétences, Monte McNaughton, indique travailler étroitement avec son homologue fédéral, Sean Fraser, sur cette question.
