Calgary Herald – Calgary Monument Honours Vietnamese Boat People Who Died in Post-war Exodus
Hundreds of Vietnamese Calgarians, as well as community and government representatives, attended a ceremony officially unveiling Journey to Freedom Park at the end of International Avenue in Forest Lawn on Friday. The monument is meant as a thank-you to Canadians and Calgarians who opened their doors to Vietnamese refugees during the migrant crisis that ensued after the end of the Vietnam War.

When the war started in Ukraine Yevhenia Vasylkova and Kristina Hulyanych made a very difficult decision to leave their families. The young couple was careful about looking for a host family. They contacted an LGBTQ+ organization, which approached a settlement centre that reached out to Hillhurst United Church in Calgary — known for its values of inclusivity.
CBC News – Markham Woman Urges Federal Immigration Department to Speed Up Ukrainian Applications
A Markham woman said she is “desperate” to get her Ukrainian parents to Canada after applying for a visitor visa more than two months ago. Olena Zhurzharova said she has messaged Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada about the status of her parents application but was told visas are granted on an individual basis and has no timeline as to when her parents can safely get to Toronto.
CBC News – New Non-Profit Aims to Help International Students Find Equal Opportunities in Manitoba
International post-secondary students contribute nearly $400 million to Manitoba’s economy each year, but Akhil Damodharan and Khushi Kalra say they see too many of those students continue to struggle. The two Manitoba post-secondary students, who both immigrated from India to Canada as children, have created their own non-profit to provide newcomers and international students with more equal opportunities.
