It may not have been the wedding they originally pictured, but a Ukrainian couple has made their love official here in Manitoba just days after arriving in Canada as refugees. Violetta and Ivan Mikho were married at a church in Stonewall Saturday, 10 days after a whirlwind trip from Europe landed them in the bedroom community, just north of Winnipeg. Violetta and Ivan got engaged in Poland in April, while awaiting Canadian visas.

Alfred Lam, the executive director of the Centre for Immigrant and Community Services, is eager to share his experience as an immigrant in Canada. Celebrating the grand opening of the organization’s new facility in Newmarket, Lam reflected on learning English from television, particularly the famed show, Cheers. The centre hopes to provide that in Newmarket as it opened June 28 at 130 Mulock Dr. Dignitaries and community organization representatives attended to celebrate the occasion and recognize the importance of inclusivity.

Remy was interviewing with a video game company when he asked the obvious question: would he need to learn French to work in Quebec? Remy wasn’t from the province and didn’t speak the language. The company, like many of the major players in Canada’s video game industry, was based in Quebec. “[So I asked], is that going to be a problem?” Remy said. “I was assured that all meetings are held in English and learning French … was optional and not expected.”

Svitlana Botvenko came to Newfoundland and Labrador after fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine with her three children earlier this year. She hoped to begin work at Northern Lights Veterinary Clinic on a three-year contract after her arrival, but is faced with a challenge that could take years to solve.
