Both boys, Elizier and Enfta, died as infants in Togo in Western Africa a decade apart, in 2009 and 2019 — while the former refugee was trying to bring his wife to join him in Canada.
Winnipeg Free Press – Province to Pay for Ukrainian Refugee Medical Tests
The Manitoba government is picking up the tab for Ukrainian refugees to get medical checks required by the federal government, after first trying to get Ottawa to pay. Under its emergency permit, Ottawa requires Ukrainians displaced by the Russian invasion to get medical exams — which can cost $350 for an adult — within their first 90 days of reaching Canada. The tests, usually an X-ray and blood test, check for communicable diseases more prevalent outside Canada, such as tuberculosis and HIV.

Le premier ministre François Legault a fait « un parallèle un peu rapide » en disant dimanche que le Québec risquait de devenir « une Louisiane » si Ottawa ne lui cédait pas les pleins pouvoirs en immigration, estime un expert embauché par le gouvernement pour le conseiller dans ce dossier. Le démographe Marc Termote appuie l’idée de rapatrier les pouvoirs en matière d’immigration. Il précise qu’Ottawa a le contrôle sur 35 % à 40 % de l’immigration permanente.

Le chef de la Coalition avenir Québec propose de hisser le thème de l’immigration parmi les principaux sujets de discussion de la campagne électorale — qui battra son plein à la fin de l’été — afin que « les Québécois comprennent bien l’urgence de rapatrier les pouvoirs » de sélection de quelque 11 000 immigrants inscrits au programme de regroupement familial, qui lui échappent à l’heure actuelle.
Le Devoir – Montréal accueille un premier vol de réfugiés ukrainiens
Un premier vol nolisé de réfugiés ukrainiens a atterri dimanche sur le sol québécois avec, à son bord, 305 femmes et enfants éprouvés par trois mois de guerre. Un comité d’accueil les attendait à la sortie afin de les prendre immédiatement en charge. Il s’agit du deuxième vol du genre à arriver au Canada cette semaine. Lundi dernier, un appareil s’est posé à Winnipeg. Un troisième vol nolisé est attendu à Halifax jeudi.
