Canada promised to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan refugees last summer and Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said in late May more than 14,000 have now arrived. But Naheed Farid, who sat in Parliament in Afghanistan for 11 years, and three Canadian senators said Thursday the applications for the remaining 26,000 are already in processing and yet there are still thousands of desperate people waiting for a chance to flee to safety.

But in 2020, she learned her little brother Ayad, then 10 years old, was alive, and had been rescued after five years in ISIS captivity. Now, after two years of trying to bring her brother to Canada from a refugee camp in Iraq, she’s desperate for the government to speed up the process.
CBC News – Feds Announce One-Time $3,000 Payment for Ukrainians Taking Refuge in Canada
Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said Thursday Ukrainians who have fled their war-torn country for Canada can now apply for a cash payment — money the government says will help these displaced people settle into their new home. Ukrainians who are in Canada on valid work, study or temporary resident permits under the Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET) regime are eligible for a one-time payment — $3,000 for every adult and $1,500 for every child 17 years and under.
CBC News – More than 300 Ukrainian Refugees Land in Halifax
More than 300 Ukrainian refugees landed in Nova Scotia on Thursday evening. After going through customs and immigration, the 319 people were met by a welcoming crowd with sunflowers and tiny Canadian flags, Ukrainian flags, Nova Scotia flags, tartan and chocolate bars. The plane, which departed from Warsaw, Poland, earlier in the day, was a bit delayed. It was the third federally chartered flight to bring those fleeing the war to Canada.

Les personnes racisées ou issues de l’immigration continuent de vivre de la discrimination en emploi, et ce, même si les besoins de main-d’œuvre demeurent criants. Une étude réalisée pour le compte de l’Observatoire sur les inégalités raciales au Québec (OIRQ) et rendue publique mercredi montre que les membres de minorités vivent la discrimination au quotidien dans leurs milieux de travail. L’étude en question a spécifiquement été réalisée auprès de 137 personnes qui disent avoir vécu de la discrimination raciale.

Allowing Quebec to verify by itself the health, security and criminal records of economic immigrants would considerably speed up the bureaucratic process and improve Quebec’s attractiveness in an increasingly competitive labour market, according to Institut du Québec chief executive Mia Homsy.
