While often passed over as hilarious, these colloquialisms are a symptom of a more serious issue that leads to communication and understanding gaps that ultimately impacts international students in Canada adversely, she said.
Sahar Sayedy heard about the Sister2Sister program through a newcomer entrepreneurship WhatsApp group and applied. Within months, she landed her current job as a research and partnerships specialist with the Immigrant Employment Council of B.C., a non-profit that connects immigrant talent with potential employers. The Sister2Sister program is run by Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto, which was founded by a group of Latin American refugees in 1983.
Member of Parliament Rechie Valdez made a trip to Manitoba this weekend to hear from local Filipino communities. The Mississauga-Streetsville representative said she specifically wanted to visit Manitoba to get to know the Filipino community. During her two-day trip, she heard Filipinos speak about their concerns which included immigration, health care and community support.

Amber Sheasgreen knows how to navigate rough water. The Prince Rupert, B.C., woman is a veteran search and rescue worker. But a recent mission in the central Mediterranean Sea was one of her most intense. “For people to choose to make that transit or to take that risk, I can’t even imagine what their life must be like,” said Sheasgreen, who worked with the NGO Refugee Rescue leading a crew made up mainly of volunteers in late 2021.
Advocates for Black, Muslim and Asian Canadians say they’re pleased to see steps taken in the federal budget to address systemic racism in Canada. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland tabled the Liberal government’s budget on Thursday. The budget promises $85 million over four years to the Department of Heritage to launch a new anti-racism strategy and a “national action plan” on combating hate.

Over a month after Russia launched its first missiles at Ukraine on Feb. 24, 40-year-old Olha Rudenko and her two children have begun to ease into their new life in Canada after fleeing from the western city of Lutsk. While Rudenko and her sons, Lukian, nine, and Stanislav, 16, spent a month in Poland arranging their trip to Ottawa, her sister, Natalia Stepaniuk, was back in Ottawa preparing for her family to arrive.
