Global News – Canada Announces Additional Support for Ukrainians Fleeing Russia’s War
The federal government has announced $100 million in additional humanitarian support to respond to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement Saturday during a social media fundraiser. With Saturday’s announcement, Canada has provided $245 million in humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
CBC News – Veteran Working to Bring Former Afghan Interpreter’s Extended Family to Halifax
When Jonathon Monaghan served with the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan in 2009 he formed a bond with his Afghan interpreter that endures to this day. Now Monaghan and his wife, Kara, are trying to get his former interpreter, his wife and 30 members of his extended family to the security of Halifax. Monaghan said they are applying for permanent residence for the family under a special Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada provision for extended families of former Afghan interpreters.

Alors que le fédéral est incapable d’atteindre sa cible de 4,4 % en immigration francophone depuis 2001, le ministre de l’Immigration Sean Fraser promet un changement de cap dès cette année. Le ministre Fraser fonde beaucoup d’espoirs en l’amélioration du système d’Entrée express qui pourrait donner lieu à cette augmentation. Les organismes francophones de leur côté critiquent le manque de flexibilité dans le système d’immigration du fédéral qui aurait besoin d’une révision, selon eux.

Canada is pledging to spend over two billion dollars over the next five years to fix and maintain its immigration system, which is currently jammed with a backlog of close to two million applications. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, in unveiling the 2022 Budget today, said the fiscal package is aimed at countering global uncertainties caused by the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has triggered a mass exodus of four million refugees.
