Des dizaines de milliers de réfugiés ukrainiens fuyant les bombardements de l’armée russe dans leur pays devraient arriver au Canada au cours des prochaines semaines. Le ministre de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté, Sean Fraser, s’attend toutefois à ce que beaucoup d’entre eux essaient de retourner en Ukraine une fois la guerre terminée, a-t-il affirmé dans une entrevue avec La Presse.
Les délais d’obtention de la résidence permanente pour des travailleurs étrangers au Québec sont de plus de deux ans. Un regroupement d’avocats spécialisés en immigration a décidé de passer à la vitesse supérieure contre Immigration Canada pour dénoncer les délais de traitement « déraisonnables » d’obtention de la résidence permanente. Selon l’AQAADI, près de 25 000 dossiers provenant de travailleurs déjà sélectionnés par Québec seraient en attente d’une réponse du gouvernement fédéral.

A Hamilton-area man who flew to the Ukraine border to help a friend get his seven-year-old sister out of the war-torn country, is not sure how long he will have to stay considering he’s not heard from them since he arrived. Ancaster native Wyatt Raitt, who had never travelled outside of North America until this trip, has been in Medyka, Poland for close to a week and a half. He hasn’t had further contact with his buddy Alec, but says he’s “holding up good.”

Quebec’s immigration and labour minister, Jean Boulet, has sent workplace health and safety investigators to look into allegations that operators of a private seniors’ home in Lévis, Que., harassed, blackmailed and underpaid six temporary migrant workers from Africa over the course of many months. Boulet called on the workplace health and safety board (CSST) to investigate after the French-language newspaper Le Devoir reported Thursday that Villa mon domaine, a 63-room residence, had been paying the workers just $50 to $70 a week.

Boulet était dans la métropole pour annoncer l’octroi de près de 5 millions de dollars à 14 organismes communautaires œuvrant à l’accueil, à l’intégration et à la francisation de nouveaux arrivants. Le ministre a dit ne pas savoir encore combien de réfugiés ukrainiens le Québec sera appelé à accueillir ni quand ceux-ci commenceront à arriver, ces questions relevant d’Ottawa.
