Migrant and refugee workers in Alberta’s meat-packing plants face dangerous working conditions and precarious employment, according to new research from York University. The research, conducted by Bronwyn Bragg and Jennifer Hyndman, alongside Calgary advocacy group ActionDignity, involved interviews and surveys with immigrant workers in the facilities. Those workers reported unsafe working conditions in meat-packing facilities, an issue exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In August, Naik Arbabzada was thrilled when she managed to quickly put together a private group of acquaintances to sponsor her elder sister’s family to Canada from Tajikistan, where the Afghans have sought refuge. But then they hit a snag because the family has not been able to secure the so-called “refugee status determination” paper, a document they need from the Tajikistan government to be recognized as refugees in need of resettlement.
Afghan refugee children who arrived in the Waterloo, Ont., region months ago are spending their days in a hotel rather than in class — because the public school board says students need a permanent address in order to register. The problem is compounded by what newcomers say are inadequate necessities as they wait to be placed, a situation a local settlement organization blames on the chaotic nature of the evacuation from Afghanistan.

Le nouveau ministre de l’Immigration du Canada, Sean Fraser, promet de vérifier « personnellement » que les préjugés inconscients des fonctionnaires de son propre ministère ne font pas en sorte de discriminer les Africains francophones souhaitant venir étudier au pays. Sean Fraser ne croit toutefois pas que l’exclusion d’un nombre croissant d’étudiants africains représente « une décision [consciente] de favoriser activement un pays plutôt qu’un autre » et il soutient qu’une grande majorité des fonctionnaires ont les meilleures intentions.
