Staff at the TAIBU Community Health Centre knew something needed to be done. Located in Scarborough, on the eastern edge of Toronto, the health clinic serves a predominantly Black and immigrant population. But looking at their patients’ charts, staff found the vast majority weren’t up to date with screening and the clinic was far below Ontario’s provincial screening averages. It was a concerning trend, as research shows that delays in cancer screenings often lead to later diagnosis and a higher risk of death.

Violence against women happens in every community, but women from newcomer communities face specific barriers to getting help and finding safety, advocates say. The Manitoba Association of Women’s Shelters launched a multilingual awareness campaign on Tuesday. The You Are Not Alone program aims to reach women experiencing domestic violence in numerous newcomer communities.

A Montreal janitor who was facing a deportation order to Ivory Coast will get to stay in Quebec a little longer after a human rights lawyer’s efforts to keep him in Canada seem to have worked — at least for now. Known as one of Quebec’s “guardian angels” for working in long-term care homes at the height of the COVID-19 crisis, Mamadou Konaté fought the deportation order over fears his life would be in danger. His lawyer, Stewart Istvanffy, confirmed to Noovo Info on Wednesday that a judge granted a stay of deportation.
