But after several challenging months trying to leave his native home of Afghanistan — a journey that saw him and his family leave the country, transit through Pakistan and have a child born along the way — Beazhan and his sister were finally reunited, this time in Canada.
Sayed Enaiatullah Najafizada and his wife are frustrated. The Afghan refugees are facing the prospect of being moved between hotels in the Greater Toronto Area for the fourth time since arriving in Canada this summer. They’re among nearly 400 Afghan refugees being shifted to new temporary lodgings on Thursday and Friday _ from a hotel in Richmond Hill, Ont., to one in Toronto’s east end — as they wait for their permanent residency applications to be processed ahead of a move to permanent housing.

The Canadian government has issued an emergency passport to the mother of a young girl who was freed from an ISIS detention camp in northeastern Syria earlier this year so she can return home to Canada and reunite with her daughter. Her daughter, age four, was released from the camp this spring and returned to Canada. The woman exited the camp months later but has since been waiting in limbo around the city of Erbil in neighbouring Iraq.

Avec une part de 35 %, l’Afrique est de loin le premier réservoir de l’immigration francophone en Ontario. Parmi ces nouveaux arrivants au Canada, beaucoup sont des réfugiés ou des demandeurs d’asile qui proviennent de pays où règnent l’instabilité politique et/ou la guerre civile pour ne citer que ces deux fléaux qui rongent le continent. On ne devient pas réfugié au Canada par choix, mais par absolue nécessité.

Le ministre de l’Immigration de la Francisation et de l’Intégration suppléant, Jean Boulet, a dit jeudi matin vouloir régler « au plus sacrant » les longs délais que connaissent plusieurs nouveaux arrivants avant d’obtenir leur aide financière à la francisation. Certains immigrants disent songer à arrêter la francisation pour travailler davantage. Plusieurs enseignants et personnel des centres de services scolaires et des cégeps constatent aussi ces délais de traitement des demandes d’aide financière.
On leur a promis 200 $ par semaine pour subsister pendant qu’ils se consacraient à temps plein à l’apprentissage du français ou 25 $ par jour de cours à temps partiel. Les délais de traitement de leur demande d’aide financière en francisation sont cependant si longs que des nouveaux arrivants passent des mois à étudier sans recevoir cette allocation. Les délais sont un « facteur de décrochage de la francisation », affirme pourtant une enseignante de la région de Québec qui vient de voir l’un de ses étudiants quitter ses cours pour cette raison.
