Le programme de regroupement familial pour les proches d’anciens interprètes afghans entrera en vigueur le 9 décembre, promet le gouvernement Trudeau. Il s’agit de demandes de regroupement familial portant sur 5000 personnes, soit des parents, frères et sœurs et membres des familles élargies des anciens interprètes. La liste de ces personnes avait été fournie au ministère le 20 septembre dernier.

Canada’s military veterans have always fought to bring to safety the Afghan interpreters they once worked with. For years, the ex-soldiers have been pressing the federal government to revive its immigration program, which brought hundreds of Afghan interpreters and their families to Canada between 2009 and 2012. In July, as the Taliban’s march back to power in Afghanistan seemed assured, Ottawa announced it would bring back and expand these special immigration measures.

This Remembrance Day, the first since Afghanistan fell to Taliban forces in the summer, will be difficult for Canadians who fought in the Middle Eastern country, says a veteran who served two missions there. Stephen Peddle, a Canadian Forces retired major, has been working to get some families of Afghan interpreters to safety. “Afghanistan and the Taliban have a brilliant intelligence network. They know who helped NATO and they know who helpedthe Canadians and the Americans,” Peddle says.

Il y a maintenant 15 ans que le gouvernement du Canada s’est fixé une cible de 4,4 % d’immigration francophone dans les communautés en situation minoritaire. Cette cible n’a jamais été atteinte, mais on se pose rarement les bonnes questions quant à cet état de fait. On multiplie les discussions, les initiatives et les programmes pour établir, intégrer et garder les immigrants de langue française arrivant dans ces communautés, mais on fait finalement peu de cas d’un élément important : la faisabilité pour les aspirants francophones à l’immigration de déposer leur dossier de candidature.

The grassroots organization, Canadian Connections, is providing newcomers evacuated from Afghanistan with essentials such as furniture and dining ware. It’s a cause that has taken on added meaning with Remembrance Day on Thursday.
