There has been broad praise for changes to Canada’s immigration policy announced earlier this year that provide a path to permanent residency for temporary foreign workers – including agricultural workers. In Chatham-Kent, workers the Caribbean, Latin America and other countries are essential to agriculture. Without their efforts, the great diversity of agriculture in the municipality would not be possible.

Toronto Star – Premier Ford Declines to Apologize for Comments About Immigrants

Ontario Premier Doug Ford would not apologize Tuesday for comments about immigrants that some called “callous” and “xenophobic,” raising concerns that he was feeding negative stereotypes about newcomers. While talking about a shortage of workers in the province a day earlier, Ford said people who want to come and work their “tail off” like every other new Canadian has done should come to Ontario, but those who want to “collect the dole and sit around” should go elsewhere.

Parwaiz Hamidy’s two young sons are all smiles as they rush down a slide at a park in Peterborough, Ont. The boys and their parents are half a world away from the chaos of Kabul, having fled the Afghan capital two months ago with the hope of starting over in Canada. The Hamidys are among nine Afghan refugee families who recently arrived in the mid-sized Ontario city after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan.

CBC News – Ontario Opposition Leaders Call on Ford to Apologize for Remark About Immigrants

Ontario’s opposition leaders are criticizing Premier Doug Ford for a comment he made about immigrants. Ford was in Tecumseh, Ont., near Windsor, Ont., on Monday to announce funding for the planning of a new hospital in the region. After the announcement, Ford launched into a familiar line about Ontario’s biggest problem being a shortage of workers, particularly in the trades and construction. He said people who want to work should come to Ontario.

CBC News – Here’s How New Career Fairs Are Connecting International Students with Employers

A new series of career development fairs is being held to connect international students with employers who are recruiting new talent. The Atlantic Student Development Alliance (ASDA) held three events over the summer, and its latest fair last Friday at UPEI. New sessions will be held every month. The latest fair included four employers in P.E.I.’s tech and bio industries, as well as guest experts on government grants and immigration.

La Presse – Appels urgents pour réunir les familles haïtiennes

Questionné par La Presse, Ottawa rejette pour le moment la proposition d’accélérer la réunification familiale de ses ressortissants haïtiens par l’entremise d’un programme spécial. Les demandes des « personnes vulnérables », des « membres de la famille qui cherchent à se réunir » et de « ceux qui travaillent dans le secteur des services essentiels » sont traitées « le plus rapidement possible », affirme la conseillère en communications du ministère fédéral de l’Immigration, Julie Lafortune.
