As Brampton East has grown into the federal riding with the largest proportion of South Asians (66 per cent), the diversity within its boundaries has grown too, along class, religious, ethnic and generational lines. There are vastly differing opinions in the riding among voters of South Asian origin on housing, jobs and – perhaps most divisive of all – immigration. Securing the so-called “immigrant vote” has become an outdated goal.

CBC News – Indigenous people in London experience more discrimination than other minorities, report finds

Indigenous people in London and Middlesex County experience more discrimination than immigrants and visible minorities, according to a report commissioned by London & Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership (LMLIP), which is associated with the City of London.  Six out of 10 Indigenous respondents said that they have faced discrimination in the region, which is 20 per cent higher than immigrants and visible minorities, over the course of the last three years.

CTV News – Refugee Claimants Take Safe Third Country Agreement Appeal to Supreme Court

Refugee claimants and their advocates are asking the Supreme Court of Canada to review a decision that affirmed the constitutionality of a key pact between Ottawa and Washington on asylum seekers. In a submission to the high court, they say the case raises “foundational questions of constitutional law” concerning access to remedies for violations of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Calgary, choisie comme port d’entrée pour les réfugiés afghans, pourrait accueillir 5000 personnes qui arriveront au Canada, notamment depuis les États-Unis, au cours des 15 prochaines semaines. Ces personnes seront relogées dans des communautés partout au pays, selon Fariborz Birjandian, président-directeur général de la Société catholique d’immigration de Calgary. Toujours selon Fariborz Birjandian, Calgary a été choisie comme un des points d’entrée en raison de sa disposition à accueillir, sa disponibilité, son expertise et son espace de vie.

Global News – Afghan Refugees Grateful to Settle into ‘Bright Future’ in Calgary

Nangiayli, whose last name Global News is not reporting to protect the safety of his family in Afghanistan, rushed with his wife and five children to catch a flight out of the danger, finding safety in Canada. Nangiayli’s family is now staying at a resettlement centre run by the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society. They’re among 100 Afghans the CCIS has taken in over the past few days. “I came with my wife, three kids and my mother,” refugee Saddat said. “We all feel at home here.”
