The year 2020 will go down as the worst for refugee resettlement in recent history, says the UN refugee agency’s Canadian representative. With nearly 168 countries implementing border and travel restrictions, millions of displaced people around the globe were stuck, unable to either return to their home countries or move to others. Canada, however, was one of only a few that did listen to urgent pleas from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said Rema Jamous Imseis, the UNHCR’s Canadian representative.
Global News – Quebec Task Force Tables Recommendations to Fight Racism in the Province
The Quebec government’s action group on racism (GACR), created in June to identify concrete actions to fight against racism in the province, tabled its first report on Monday. Entitled Racism in Quebec: tolerance zero, the report was drafted after consultations with some 50 organizations and individuals and includes 25 recommendations — several of which are aimed at improving policing.

En 2015, Ottawa annonçait un plan pour réinstaller au Canada des réfugiés syriens, qui fuyaient la guerre et la crise humanitaire dans leur pays. Depuis, 43 000 Syriens ont trouvé refuge au Canada, dont environ 4000 au Manitoba.

Le nombre de réfugiés qui se sont installés au Canada a dégringolé cette année en raison des restrictions de voyage liées à la pandémie de COVID-19. Le Canada planifiait l’accueil de 20 000 réfugiés parrainés en 2020, mais à la fin septembre seulement 3500 d’entre eux avaient foulé le sol canadien.

Hassan said in her past sponsorship experiences, the work revolved around getting the newly arrived person or family to be self-sufficient as soon as possible. That all went out the window with COVID-19.
