A small group of London-area residents is now trying to help him, hoping to sponsor the Pakistani man they refer to only as Shan to come to Canada. They also hope to get other Canadians interested in helping others like Shan.
Relatives of a dozen Hong Kong residents who have been detained in mainland China for more than 3 1/2 months made a plea Saturday to be informed of the timing of any trials and whether they can attend. The request underscored the sharp contrast between the relatively open legal system in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese territory, and that of the mainland, where often little information is divulged until a trial is over.

L’accueil que Jean a reçu au Canada, son « pays de rêve » comme il l’appelait, a été brutal. Au terme d’un dur voyage de trois mois, en bateau et à pied, pour fuir la violence dans son pays, Jean croyait que son garçon de 4 ans, sa fille de 2 ans et lui étaient enfin en sécurité. Lors de mon passage à l’hôpital, j’ai été surpris par le nombre de personnes issues de l’immigration récente travaillant dans les services non médicaux de l’hôpital : cuisine, entretien ménager, buanderie, sécurité… Lors de certains quarts de travail, près de la moitié des employés rencontrés n’étaient au Canada que depuis moins d’un an. Et plusieurs de ces personnes étaient passées par le chemin Roxham.

Alors que le programme de régularisation des anges gardiens sera lancé le 14 décembre, le ministre fédéral de l’Immigration du Canada dit garder « la porte ouverte » pour négocier une seconde phase avec le Québec, qui pourrait inclure les demandeurs d’asile qui ne travaillent pas en soins directs aux patients. « Le message clé est si le gouvernement du Québec pense, avec plus de temps, qu’il faut reconsidérer les paramètres, je serai là pour avoir cette discussion [avec lui] », a dit le ministre Marco Mendicino en entrevue au Devoir.

More than 4,000 children of immigrants living in Quebec could finally be able to access the province’s health insurance plan, under legislation tabled Thursday by the government. For decades, children of parents who had a precarious or unsettled immigration status were not covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec. That meant that even some children born in Quebec, and who were thus Canadian citizens, were unable to benefit from the province’s free, universal health-care system.
