CTV News – Pregnant Woman Faces Deportation Despite Doctors Warning It’s Unsafe for Her to Travel

The Canadian Border and Services Agency has scheduled Farhana Sultana’s flight home for Jan. 10 after her permanent residency application was rejected last month. Sultana told CTV News Toronto that she’s now simply begging the federal agency to at least let her stay until she gives birth to her baby girl, who is due on March 1, to ensure no harm is caused to her child or herself. A doctor, who specializes in high risk pregnancies, wrote to the CBSA that Sultana is under her care for investigation of cardiac issues in pregnancy.

Au cœur d’une controverse, la juge en chef du Québec, Nicole Duval Hesler, prend ses distances par rapport à l’Association de droit Lord Reading, qui a déposé une procédure devant les tribunaux afin d’intervenir dans une contestation de la Loi sur la laïcité de l’État. La juge ne donnera donc pas sa conférence prévue la semaine prochaine sur le thème Comment éviter les conflits d’intérêts à la Cour d’appel. Le souper-conférence organisé par l’association Lord Reading devait avoir lieu le 10 décembre à la synagogue Shaar Hashomayim à Westmount.

Sahndra is in a period of transition. Three months ago, the 35-year-old immigrated to Canada from Cameroon in the hope of finding better opportunities for her four-year-old son. Sahndra is set to receive a little help over the holidays from the Gazette Christmas Fund. Each year, thousands of families in Montreal receive a $125 cheque to help get through the season. She said the money will allow her to buy some much-needed winter clothes for her son.

Global News – Soapy Success for Syrian Refugee Continuing Family Business in Canada

A Syrian refugee from Calgary, who has been using his background in soap-making to build a fresh start in Canada, has expanded to Edmonton. Abdulfatah Sabouni is a fourth generation soap maker. Sabouni was invited to come to Canada as a refugee in 2016. He wanted to continue the family’s 125-year soap legacy in Canada — his last name actually means ‘soap maker.’

Wilman Antonio “Junior” Guerrero created a music video highlighting his skills as a construction worker in hopes of attracting the attention of a Canadian company who might hire him under the Federal Skill Trades Program. “I have been dreaming of immigrating to Canada for years; it’s been a long, very difficult, road,” Guerrero told CTVNews.ca by phone from his hometown of Valledupar, Colombia, Sunday.

Le Devoir – Loi sur la laïcité de l’État : la juge en chef de la Cour d’appel visée par une plainte

Dans l’appel de la contestation de la Loi sur la laïcité de l’État, la juge en chef de la Cour d’appel du Québec, Nicole Duval Hesler, fait l’objet d’une plainte au Conseil canadien de la magistrature. La plainte a été formulée jeudi et rendue publique dimanche par l’historien et professeur au collège Dawson Frédéric Bastien. Il estime que la juge en chef a manqué à son devoir de réserve et qu’elle devrait se récuser. En cas de refus de sa part, il demande à ce que la ministre de la Justice et procureure générale du Québec, Sonia Lebel, lui suggère de le faire.
