CTV News – Border Workers’ Union Says ‘Two-Tier System’ at CBSA Creates Toxic Environment

The union representing thousands of front-line employees working without a contract at the Canadian border has released a scathing new video accusing management at the Canada Border Services Agency of “abuse of authority” and “harassment.” The video, which runs just under two minutes, features two alleged incidents where the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU) says supervisors assaulted employees but were never disciplined. “We feel there’s a two-tier system at CBSA,” said CIU national president Jean-Pierre Fortin. “One for the managers, and one for the employees, our members.

Toronto Star – Quebec’s Immigration Reform Fiasco Casts Spotlight on CAQ’s Nationalism

The failure to reform the Quebec Experience Program for temporary foreign workers has provoked a lot of debate in the province. Most of it focused on the insensitivity of Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette and the choices of Premier François Legault. (Amid criticism, the province backtracked on restrictions it had put in.) But by concentrating on the shortcomings of the main players, there’s a risk of minimizing the ideological context of the failure of the reforms.

CBC News – ‘Our Hearts Are Broken’: Sherbrooke Family of 5 Deported After Asylum Claims Rejected

Despite the exhaustive efforts of community members, friends and provincial officials, a young Sherbrooke family was deported Wednesday evening. “We are very sad now,” Carolina Batalla said before boarding the plane in Montreal with her husband and three children. Originally from Colombia, Batalla and Normando Charris moved to the Eastern Townships with their two daughters five years ago, and have since had a son. Before that, they lived in Spain for eight years, but left for Canada because they felt they were victims of intimidation.

CBC News – McNeil Calls for Faster Licensing of Doctors Looking to Work in N.S.

Nova Scotia’s premier is calling on medical colleges across Canada to modernize the way they license physicians, and says work underway in the Atlantic region is a start. Dr. Thomas Dietz wants to work in the community’s emergency department, which was closed nearly 40 per cent of the time in the last reported fiscal year. But one of Dietz’s major hurdles was waiting six months for an organization to verify an internship he completed in the early 1980s. The doctor questioned why they were communicating by mail instead of simply picking up the phone.
