CBC News – Nigerian Family Faces Deportation After Fleeing to Canada Two Years Ago

A Nigerian family facing deportation is calling on the Canadian government to provide any assistance possible to avoid returning home, out of fear that two young girls — with another on the way — will be subjected to female genital mutilation. Rasheedat Bakare, her husband Afeez, son Faaiq and daughter Faiqah all fled Nigeria and arrived in Canada in 2017. The family’s youngest daughter Farhana was born in Canada in 2018. The family of five was denied refugee status on Thursday and were told to leave the country by 3 p.m. on Friday.

Global News – Nova Scotia Scots Can Now Express Their Scottish Connection Via the .scot Domain

“As a 25-year resident of Canada, I am keenly aware of the intimate connections between Scotland and Canada and have long sought ways to bring Scotland and its Canadian diaspora together,” said Harry McGrath, chair and head of engagement and global outreach at dotScot Registry. To do that, McGrath said in the internet age “the .scot domain has the power to overcome distance.” The .scot domain is Scotland’s internet identity and the community domain for ‘the worldwide family of Scots’, according to McGrath who is a Scots-Canadian himself.

Global News – Refugee Judge Asks Woman Why Her Husband Wouldn’t ‘Just Kill’ Her

Halima Alari sat before a Canadian refugee judge and tried to explain why her husband didn’t kill her. “If he really wants you to be gone, why doesn’t he just kill you?” asked refugee judge Yonatan Rozenszajn during a hearing at Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) in April. Alari’s lawyer, Talia Joundi, says Rozenszajn’s line of questioning was an “egregious violation” of the IRB’s guidelines set out for cases involving allegations of sexual assault and domestic abuse.

National Post – ‘Flagpoling’: How Immigrants Leave Canada to Stay in Canada

Flagpoling occurs when temporary residents in Canada cross the border for the sole purpose of turning around to receive immediate immigration services at a port of entry. It’s a completely legal and much quicker way of getting their documents processed. Flagpoling also poses no additional security threats because the people who do it would have already gone through checks when they originally entered Canada.
