As the only Jewish agency in the country devoted exclusively to the sponsorship, settlement and assimilation of refugees and immigrants, JIAS, as it is known, has helped hundreds of thousands of newcomers — Jews and non-Jews alike — start new lives in Canada. Now, as its centennial year and anniversary celebrations come to a close, JIAS’s services and supports are in as much demand as at any time in the past.

Next month will mark one year since Russia invaded Ukraine. While many have stayed in the country, refugees continue to flee in search of a safer, more peaceful life. In the first two weeks of the invasion, an estimated three million people fled. Canada has taken in more than 132,000 Ukrainian refugees, but some organizations are still looking for hosts to house more, particularly refugees who identify as LGBTQ.
Toronto Star – N.S. Opposition Worries Health Workers Recruited from Refugee Camp Could Lack Housing
The Nova Scotia government must guarantee housing for the 65 health-care workers it recently recruited from a Kenyan refugee camp, opposition parties said Thursday. NDP Leader Claudia Chender told reporters she’s happy to see increased immigration to Nova Scotia but said she is worried about people being recruited to a province that lacks public services and housing.
CBC News – Man Found Dead Near Quebec’s Roxham Road Border Crossing
A man was found dead on Wednesday near Roxham Road, a common passage between the United States and Canada used by migrants to claim asylum. The man was a migrant who was trying to cross the unofficial border, according to police sources who spoke to Radio-Canada on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Quebec’s provincial police force, confirmed the death on Thursday morning. The circumstances of the death remain unclear.
CBC News – Deportation Order for Chef John Mulwa ‘Traumatized’ Hamilton’s Kenyan Community
Chef John Mulwa has been an important part of Hamilton’s Kenyan community for almost a decade, after coming to Canada in 2014, fleeing violence in his country of origin. On Jan. 28, he will be deported back to Kenya where, he says, some family members have been killed over land disputes and it won’t be safe for him to return. “John is one of the most vibrant people we have in this community,” said friend and fellow Kenyan-Hamiltonian Jared Kibagendi.
Windsor Star – Windsor Welcomed an Unusually High Number of Refugees in 2022
Windsor welcomed nearly 1,800 refugees and asylum seekers last year, a number that spiked drastically as wars and injustice escalated across the globe. The Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County said Windsor welcomed about 750 government-assisted refugees in 2022, a considerable increase over the 400 to 500 that usually arrive here. Multicultural council executive director Fred Francis said that in September alone, about 135 Afghan refugees arrived in Windsor.
