A two-year ban on some foreigners buying homes in Canada has come into effect. The ban aims to help ease one of the most unaffordable housing markets in the world. As of this summer, the average home price in Canada is C$777,200 ($568,000; £473,700) – more than 11 times the median household income after taxes. Some have been critical of the ban, saying it is unclear what impact it will have on Canada’s housing market.
The federal government settled 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022, blowing past the previous all-time record set in 2021. It’s one signal that the federal government appears on track to carry out its immigration plan. Next year, the government hopes to bring in another 485,000 new permanent residents.
Canada set a new immigration record last year with more than 430,000 permanent residents arriving in the country. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said in a news release Tuesday that the federal government has reached its goal of welcoming 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022. Ottawa beat its previous record set in 2021, when Canada welcomed more than 401,000 new permanent residents.

A Toronto charity is planning to build a tribute wall to honour the legacy of Italians immigrants who came to Canada to start new lives and whose hard work shaped the communities in which they lived. Villa Charities Inc. has launched what it calls its Italian Canadian tribute project in which people can buy plaques for $1,000. Each one will feature up to two names of family members and the years that they arrived in Canada.

A long wait is over for one of Thunder Bay’s most well-known volunteers, who wasn’t sure if he’d get to stay in Canada past New Year’s Day. Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal came to Canada from Chittagong, Bangladesh, in August 2018. Since then, he’s called Thunder Bay home, and has made close connections with community members through his work and volunteerism.

L’Île-du-Prince-Édouard a retenu 28 % de ses immigrants pendant au moins cinq ans après leur arrivée dans la province, selon Statistique Canada. Ces nouvelles données concernent l’année 2020. Il s’agit d’une augmentation de 12,4 % comparativement aux données de 2015, où seulement 15,6 % des immigrants de l’île restaient dans la province pendant au moins 5 ans. Les chiffres de l’île restent néanmoins les plus bas au pays.
