Since the war in Ukraine began, thousands of Ukrainians fleeing the violence have arrived in Canada through the Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET). This program only allows these Ukrainian newcomers to stay in Canada on a temporary basis for up to three years. But as they settle into life in Canada and the war back home drags on, those who wish to stay permanently currently have very few options.

Manitoba’s biggest population boost in more a century has come at a time when the province is struggling with a health-care crisis and high inflation. Despite the challenges, the news is being welcomed by business leaders and others who say the province risks stagnating if it doesn’t draw more people to live and work here. Federal immigration data shows 21,630 newcomers moved here last year; 15,395 settled in Winnipeg and 1,865 went to Brandon. The rest have found homes in dozens of other, smaller Manitoba communities.
Toronto Star – Nova Scotia Recruits 65 Continuing-Care Assistants from Kenyan Refugee Camp
Health Minister Michelle Thompson says that one of the province’s biggest challenges is filling health-care worker vacancies. She says her government led a recruitment trip to a refugee camp in Kenya, alongside the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and other groups. The province says the recruitment effort was conducted through a federal program that identifies refugees with much-needed skills who meet regional and provincial immigration requirements.

Administrative delays within the federal asylum application process and a lack of resources at organizations mandated to help would-be refugees are forcing the vulnerable group to turn to homeless shelters, France Labelle, executive director of a downtown Montreal youth shelter, said in a recent interview. Labelle, who runs the Refuge des jeunes de Montréal, said her shelter receives about 500 people per year and that since the spring, it has helped 57 asylum seekers.

Abdul Qayum Hemat first reached out to The Globe and Mail in July, 2021, terrified that Canada would leave him and a group of drivers behind as the Taliban swept across Afghanistan. A month later, he and his family were brought to Toronto. Now he’s living in an apartment complex with other Afghans who worked for Canada’s embassy as his neighbours, his kids are happy in school, and he and his wife recently welcomed a baby boy.
