Khaled al-Mouktaran and his family arrived in Canada in 2016 as refugees fleeing civil war in Syria in search of a better life. He and his family were first housed in a Toronto hotel while they figured out a more permanent housing situation. During this trying time, al-Mouktaran said the volunteers and hotel staff made the transition into Canadian life easier.
Global News – Migrant Workers, International Students Face Barriers to New Government Immigration Program: Advocates
The Migrant Rights Network, Canada’s largest migrant-led coalition, launched an online voluntary survey tool for migrants and graduates to determine if they qualify for the federal government’s special program. Between April 15 and May 1, more than 3,000 people responded. The organization then analyzed the results, which are not scientific or nationally representative. It found that students and workers face various barriers to access the new one-time immigration program announced by Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino in April.

CBC News – Death of Migrant Farm Worker in Mississauga Hotel Prompts Call for Better Protections
Romario Morgan, 22, died on Thursday, April 29 before he was to start work on an Ontario farm. He was found unresponsive and flat on his back in a hotel room. The cause of death is not known. Chris Ramsaroop, an organizer with the activist group Justice for Migrant Workers, said there should be an independent investigation into Morgan’s death to determine if there is a connection to his work. Ramsaroop said there are reports of recent deaths of two other farm workers, one from Trinidad and Tobago and one from Mexico.

Moncton High School staff and students are rallying around two Syrian brothers, whose family is in dire straits. “They need help and I would like to think that some people in the community will see that,” said Heather Gunn, who is a teacher at the high school who has helped to organize a campaign in support of the two students who attend Moncton High School.
