CBC News – Calgary Companies Launch Their Own Tech Upskilling Program Due to Talent Shortage

A consortium of companies in Calgary has started a worker upskilling program, saying there aren’t enough technology sector professionals in the city to keep up with demand. Vog App Developers, Immigrant Services Calgary, Windmill Microlending and Finney-Taylor Consulting have banded together to train and place immigrant workers in tech careers. Vince O’Gorman, the CEO of Vog, told CBC News on a scale of one to 10 the struggle to find qualified mid-career workers is a 10 right now.

Selon des responsables de l’accueil des immigrants dans diverses régions du pays, l’initiative permet même aux communautés francophones établies de mieux identifier leurs besoins. Le projet de Communautés francophones accueillantes (CFA), une initiative menée par Immigration Réfugiés et Citoyenneté Canada (IRCC), a pour but de faciliter l’arrivée de nouveaux arrivants dans la francophonie canadienne.

Chronicle Herald – P.E.I. Bill Aims to Strengthen Temporary Foreign Worker Protection

After a decade of advocacy from the Cooper Institute, the P.E.I. government is moving to improve labour protections for temporary foreign workers in farmers’ fields, fish plants and other workplaces. Earlier this month, Economic Growth Minister Matthew MacKay tabled a bill in the P.E.I. legislature aimed at providing better protection for migrant workers from exploitative practices of overseas recruiting agencies.

CBC News – Language Specific Vaccine Info Sessions Available for Guelph Newcomers

Immigrant and newcomer communities living in Wellington County and Guelph can tune into language specific workshops that focus on providing information on the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. Several workshops in different languages will take place over the next couple of weeks virtually. They’ve been put together by the staff at the Immigration Services Guelph-Wellington (ISGW) and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDG).

Global News – Syrian Refugees Reflect on 10th Anniversary of Conflict That Forced Them to Leave

This month marks a sombre milestone in the Syrian conflict. It was 10 years ago this month that peaceful protests were met by a violent crackdown and spiralled into civil war. Ghamen is one of about 80,000 Syrians who came to Canada since fighting broke out in 2011. She was a teacher in Syria but now works for a catering company, Les Filles Fattoush.
