CBC News – Protesters in Laval Call on Federal Government to Stop Detaining Migrants During Pandemic

A group of activists gathered in front of the Immigration Holding Centre in Laval on Saturday to protest the detention of migrants after several cases of COVID-19 were reported in the facility last month. Protests were held in Quebec and across the country to mark the one-year anniversary of the first reported case of COVID-19 at a Canadian detention centre. Immigration detention facilities, like the one in Laval, are federally-operated centres where people are held pending decisions from immigration authorities about deportation and the granting of visas.

Global News – ‘Everyone Is At Risk’: Migrants and Undocumented Workers Need the COVID-19 Vaccine Too

During the pandemic, essential workers like Lily are being called heroes. But despite caring for people on the frontlines of this health crisis, Lily herself doesn’t have access to healthcare. She’s undocumented. We have changed her name to protect her identity as she fears deportation. Because she works in long-term care in Toronto, one of the cities hardest hit by COVID-19, she should have been among some of the first people to receive the vaccine.

Toronto Star – U.S. Spa Murders Highlight Pattern of ‘Disturbing, Racist Attacks’ Against Asian Diaspora, Say Canadian Advocates

Members of Asian Canadian communities have long been sounding the alarm about the increase in violent, racist incidents across Canada since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Now, following shootings in Atlanta that left six women of Asian descent dead, they say trying to raise attention to the issue has left them exhausted. Ongoing research by several organizations into increased anti-Asian racism in the wake of COVID-19 has shown the majority of those impacted by attacks are Asian women.
